Mexico City

Mexico City (Spanish Ciudad de México) is the capital of Mexico. The city is the political, economic, social and cultural center and the largest transport hub in the country. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Mexico and numerous universities. The Mexicans call their capital usually México DF or Distrito Federal. When landing at Mexico City one is struck by the never-ending sea of houses. The streets run monotonously straight between the houses. Today, over 19 million people live in Mexico City, the chessboard-shaped Mega City to Tokyo is the world's second-largest city, about 25 million inhabitants live in the agglomeration. Just know that none of that information varies in each case by a few million depending on the source. The city grew in recent years, unimpressed and uncontrolled. The hope for a better life in this juggernaut is available only for a very few. Everything here is bigger, faster, more glamorous and more aggressive than in the province. However, the essential attractions are simply breathtaking. The vibrant nightlife, shopping and history make the city an attractive tourist destination. The origin of Mexico City dates back to the 14th century. According to a legend, the nomadic Aztecs were instructed by their god Huitzilopochtli, to create their capital Tenochtitlan on that place where an eagle is sitting on a cactus eating a snake. On the ruins of the former Aztec Empire, the present-day metropolis grew. The original town was situated on a lake, which was drained after the Spanish colonization, to make room for the growing population. For this reason, the city is struggling today with major problems by a sinking, loose soil. The city is located 2,200 meters above sea level in a valley. Some people have reported difficulty in breathing, but these symptoms disappear after a few minutes of arrival.

The temple was called the huey teocalli in the Nahuatl language and dedicated simultaneously to two gods, Huitzilopochtli, god of war and Tlaloc, god of rain and agriculture, each of which had a shrine at the top of the pyramid with separate staircases (Map).
The Nacional Monte de Piedad is a not-for-profit- institution and pawnshop whose main office is located just off the Zócalo, or main plaza of Mexico City.
