Warsaw (Polish: Warszawa) is the capital of Poland since 1596. The city on the Vistula River is the center of the Eastern European economic boom. The capital of Poland is located right in the heart of Europe, where the paths of East / West and North / South cross with cultural influences of Western and Eastern Europe. Warsaw has 1.7 million inhabitants (metropolitan area: 3 million), the largest city in Poland. The city excites with its contrasts and differences. Warsaw was destroyed during World War II to 80%. Between 1949 and 1955, the old town and the splendid palaces were faithfully reconstructed. Since 1984, the Royal Castle is back in its original form and original glory. Since the end of socialism, the city is experiencing a real boom. Everywhere glass office towers, hotels and shopping centers rise up. The formerly colorless city has been transformed into a modern, dynamic and charming metropolis. Warsaw is becoming increasingly popular thanks to numerous shopping venues, exciting nightlife and diverse cultural events. Towards the east, between the Palace of Culture and the Vistula, extends the historic, UNESCO world heritage Old Town, which was rebuilt in the 50s again. East of the Vistula is the trendy district of Praga, which is now populated by many artists and students and has a lively nightlife to offer.

Get around
General: Most sights in Warsaw are fairly close together, so it is easy to walk. Warsaw has a very good public transport system with a subway and tram network. The metro runs daily from 5:00-0:00 o'clock and at peak times every 3-4 minutes, otherwise every 7-8 minutes. Warsaw has a bus and tram network, which dominates public transport since the Metro is still in development. The tram therefore is usually better for the path from A to B. There are about 30 tram lines which connect large parts of the city together. Tickets for public transportation can be bought in Warsaw in representations of the MDT, at newspaper stands and at ticket machines in the metro stations, railway stations and transfer hubs.
The bus is the most common public transport with around 100 lines. Buses, however, are often overloaded at peak times or are stuck in heavy traffic. Bus stops are available at all major intersections of the city. A distinction is made between the normal bus (black number) and the express bus (red number), which stops at the more important stops and is faster. Night buses that run from about 23 clock special are marked with 'N'. Generally a ticket (Bilet jednorazowy) costs 4.40 PLN. So you can drive 75 minutes and change as often as you want. There are also day tickets (Bilet dobowy) to 15.00 PLN, weekend Cards (weekendowy Bilet, valid from Friday 19:00 to Monday 08:00) to 24.00 PLN and weekend group tickets (Bilet weekendowy grupowy) to 40,00 PLN for 5 people.

Recommended is a trip to Łowicz and a trip to the castle Modlin Fortress (Map) (32 km) near Zakroczym. Modlin Fortress (Polish Twierdza Modlin) is one of the biggest 19th century fortresses in Poland.
