Sorrento is an italian town with 16535 inhabitants in the province of Naples. It is part of the Mountain Community Comunità Montana Mons Lactarius. From Sorrento you can take many interesting excursions in the area. Quick leads to the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum or Vesuvius. From the harbor in Sorrento boats go to Capri, Positano, Amalfi and Ischia from the Marina Piccola. Sunsets, orange and lemon gardens attract visitors for 2000 years from around the world. Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are known for their large lemons. Sorrento was a favorite vacation spot of the rich Roman families. Many writers and painters have immortalized the place in their works. Sorrento has to offer its visitors a lot of attractions. The heart of the town are the shopping street Via San Cesareo, the Piazza San Antonio and the Corso Italia. The tip of the peninsula of Sorrento is just 5 kilometers from Capri. It lies on black cliffs of dark volcanic rock on a tufa terrace, surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs.

Get around

General:
Sorrento can be easily explored on foot. Nearly all tourist destination are in the city centre. There are some local bus lines, but a private car is recommended.
Every half hour there is a train (Circumvesuviana) from Sorrento to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. It connects Sorrento with Naples Central Station. Buses leave from the main station to the Amalfi Coast. Fast boats from the port connect Sorrento with Capri, Ischia, Naples, Positano and Amalfi. For all transport applies: In the high season it is very crowded and the tickets should be booked early.
