Leuven (Leuven Dutch, French Louvain) is a Belgian city in the Flemish Region and is located around 20 kilometers east of Brussels, on the river Dyle. Leuven is especially known for its university: of 92000 inhabitants are 37000 students. The town has some of the finest examples of Flemish architecture, especially the Gothic Town Hall and the Old Market. The name 'Leuven' used today first appears in writings from the 16th century. Leuven includes two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Groot Begijnhof (Great Beguinage) and the bell tower of St. Peter.

Gothic Town Hall The Town Hall, built by Sulpitius van Vorst, Jan II Keldermans, and, after both of them died, Matheus de Layens between 1439 and 1463 in a Brabantian late-Gothic style.
